RYA Level 1 is designed for complete beginners who would like to learn to sail. It is an introduction to the sport covering the minimum knowledge required to get afloat under supervision. At the end of this course you will have a basic understanding of boat handling and sailing theory and be able to sail a dinghy on your own. On completion of this course you will receive an RYA certificate and be ready for the next step - RYA Level 2.
RYA Level 1 involves practical work including:
- Rigging a boat
- Understanding and naming parts of the boat
- Lauching and Recovery
- Sailing Techniques
- Wind Awareness
No special clothing or equipment is required for this course but bringing a change of clothing is recommended. It can get cold out on the water so warm clothing should be considered. Your feet may get wet so wear an old pair of trainers or pumps with a reasonable amount of grip. During the course guidance will be given on specialised clothing and equipment you may with to invest in.
The practical work is supported by some classwork involving sailing theory and rules of the road.
All training will be carried out by RYA Dinghy Instructors and the club is a recognised RYA Training centre.
